RV tires age even when miles look low
Trailers and coaches often sit in sun and heat. Sidewall aging and date codes matter as much as tread depth — sometimes more.
Active corridor: Montana · Wyoming · Idaho · Washington — case-by-case beyond.
United Mobile RV sees aged tires fail on hot pavement with “plenty of tread.” Treat calendar age as a safety limit.
What to inspect
DOT date code
Find the four-digit week/year. Manufacturer guidance varies — follow the tire maker and your coach/trailer guidance; do not invent a universal year cutoff here.
Sidewall cracks
Ozone checking and weather cracks on the sidewall are age/UV damage. Deep cracks are a replace-now signal.
Bulges & flat spots
Impacts and long sits create damage tread depth will not show.
Spare honesty
Spares age too. An ancient spare is not a plan.
Pressure still matters
Cold inflation
Set pressure cold for the actual load — see the load/pressure chart guide. Underinflation cooks aging sidewalls.
TPMS
A good TPMS catches heat and leaks early on corridor days.
- Read DOT date on every tire including spare
- Inspect sidewalls in good light
- Set cold pressure to load
- Replace on age/damage even if tread remains
Field reality on the corridor
Measure before you buy parts
Forums love parts lists. A meter, a scale ticket, or a cold pressure check usually beats a guess. Bring photos when you Text Now — year, make, and a clear shot of the fault beat a long thread.
DIY boundary
Owners can inspect, document, and do basic setup from manufacturer manuals. Stop when you smell burning, see structural damage, or the fix needs sealed systems, gas work, or high-current DC you are not trained for.
