Fifth-wheel hitch install & service
Fifth-wheel hitches put pin weight over the truck bed — into the frame when installed correctly. Fixed vs sliding, jaw care, and hardware checks matter more than a bumper-pull ever did.
Active corridor: Montana · Wyoming · Idaho · Washington — case-by-case beyond.
A correct bed-rail system bolts through the truck frame, not just the bed floor. Shortcut floor-only hardware is how pin weight becomes a wrinkled bed and a safety problem. Which hitch you need — fixed or sliding — depends on bed length and kingpin-box clearance on tight turns, not on what was on sale.
Who this is for
Right place if you
Are choosing fixed vs slider for a short-bed truck. Inherited a hitch and never inspected the jaws. Hear or feel play at hitch-up. Need a corridor install or torque/hardware check per the maker manual.
Maybe not yet if
You tow bumper-pull — see weight distribution hitch. You need axle math first — weigh the combination.
Fixed vs sliding, rails, and pin box
Fixed heads
One mounting position. Fine when bed length and trailer geometry clear the cab in the turns you actually make.
Sliding heads
Move fore-aft so short-bed trucks can clear the cab. Practice the slide before you need it in a fuel island.
Rail kits
Follow the hitch and truck applications list. Hardware into the frame rails is the point — measure on-site, use the fastener callouts in the install sheet, and do not invent torque from a forum.
Pin box height
Trailer should ride level enough for stable handling and correct clearance. Adjust per pin-box and hitch instructions — not by stacking random blocks.
Maintenance that gets skipped
The jaw that locks around the kingpin needs the lubricant the hitch maker specifies — some designs are sensitive to the wrong product. Generic chassis grease is not automatically correct. Check jaw wear and locking-handle engagement at each hitch-up; play around the kingpin is a safety issue, not a “later” item. Head pivot bushings and head-to-base hardware loosen with miles — a periodic check against the manual catches it before you feel it at highway speed.
Owner checklist
- Confirm truck bed length vs hitch type before purchase
- Keep the install sheet and lube spec with the truck
- Inspect jaws, handle lock, and kingpin wear every hitch-up
- Verify 7-pin, breakaway, and brake controller gain with the trailer attached
- After any bed or hitch work, re-check hardware per the maker — measure, do not guess
Failure modes we see
Floor-only mounts
Pin weight into sheet metal. Wrong.
Wrong lube on jaws
Sticky or glazed lock surfaces; hard hitch-up; skipped inspections.
Slider left aft on the highway
Cab clearance mode used as travel mode — follow the hitch instructions for road position.
Ignored play
“It always clunks” until the jaw or pin box is worn past safe.
DIY vs book UMRT
Reasonable DIY
Owner inspections, lube per sheet, practice hitch-up on level ground, photograph rail hardware condition.

FAQ
Do I need a slider?
Short beds and long overhangs often do. Confirm against hitch applications and your trailer’s pin-box geometry — cab contact is expensive.
Can you quote torque here?
No. Use the hitch install sheet for your hardware. We measure on-site against that document.
